The hugely popular series is based on the book by Margaret Atwood.Īs the first three episodes were released in the US via Hulu yesterday, there's some vague, yet telling, episode descriptions to pore over: Obviously, this is a pretty big deal and Gilead will no doubt respond quite drastically. Season 3 ended with the small matter of 86 children being smuggled into Canada in a cargo plane. The series follows June's bid to survive, to be reunited with her daughter and, eventually, to bring down Gilead. The main character is June, who was forced into being a Handmaid after trying to escape Gilead with her husband and her young daughter. Handmaids are forced to bear children for the childless Commanders - the high-ranking male politicians running the society - and their wives. In this dystopian future, women are treated like property, the fertility rate is in steep decline and the government's main goal is to repopulate the country.ĭissenting women who are infertile are punished by death or are sent to clean toxic waste, but fertile "fallen women" are used as Handmaids. The series is set in Gilead, which used to be the US before an extremist Christian sect rose to power and enforced a totalitarian regime. Season 4 comes 20 months since new episodes were released.
